Menzerna invests in a new tank farm
Menzerna has again made good progress with its objective to „humanize the work environment“, which it has started a good while back: The best and literally shining example for this is the tank farm on the open-air ground in front of the production hall.
So far, eight tanks with liquid input materials for producing polishing agents - mainly mineral oils, lubricants and waxes - were stored in the tank storage area outside. For the two new tanks, a new tank storage area was specially created next to the old one. They are filled with 28 tons of paraffin and 26 tons of tallow fatty acid. The tank farm, as reported by the Head of Engineering, Dieter Mas, has a maximum capacity of 140 tons. The investment of approx. 80,000 Euro per tank is well worth it. Mas regards the measure as a further step towards work improvement and cutback of physically strenuous work situations. „Previously, the input materials were delivered in sacks. They had to be hauled up to the high rack, moved to the manufacture line and then inserted manually. Today, all this is done at the touch of a button.“ In other words: The tanks are directly linked to the machines or consumers respectively by pipes. The connection via the roadway occurs through a tunnel.
The long-term objective is to get away from the sacks completely one day. Menzerna has already achieved this for the liquid materials; “they have gradually been moved to the outside,” says Mas. However, things are a bit more complicated for solids. With regard to silos for solids, there is the problem of agglutination and wastage. „But we will bear the silos for solids in mind,” says the Head of Engineering, pointing out that with these changes, above all an attempt is made to clear some space in the hall. „With this, we can save storage capacities. This means that building a new hall is not necessary for the time being.”
As social aspects play an important role for Menzerna apart from the important issue of „space“, the next project also fits the bill. So called „Big Bags“ will be introduced this year still, with a capacity of one ton. They are supposed to replace the former 25 kg sacks. They are transported mechanically. The advantage is simpler and faster handling as well as less physical strain for the employees. “With this, we make sure that employees can fill these workplaces long-term, even as they get older,” says Mas.
